Frequently Asked Questions
What does the new campus include?
The new campus includes a school with 12 classrooms, school offices, cafeteria, basketball court and playground. Adjacent to the school are the new offices for 2nd Mile Missions as well as the workshop for Vida Plena. Eventually we will add a second floor above the offices for mission trip housing and a large meeting room.
How much does the project cost?
Our current budget is $250,000 for completing the first phase of the project. We have raised about 70% of our goal, or $183,000.
When are the start and completion dates?
The ground breaking ceremony was September 8, 2020 and the expected completion date for the whole building project is early August 2021. Right now, construction is ahead of schedule and we plan to start our 2021-2022 school year in early September.
Why are you building a new campus?
Everyday we see more and more kids running the streets without a school to attend. The Bávaro area is growing like crazy and there are not enough schools to provide education to all who need it. Our new school won’t solve that problem, but will create the opportunity for 200 more kids to attend so who so desperately need it. We are also in need of larger offices for our growing staff and a permanent workshop for Vida Plena.
Will the students at the new school be sponsored?
The new school will be a combination of kids who pay tuition and kids who are sponsored.
Will Vida Plena have more training opportunities?
We will be continuing the current training programs (sewing, baking, artisan craft and jewelry) and also plan to add the young men’s apprenticeship program which will train in basic trades like electrical, plumbing, mechanics, etc. We wi’ll also hopefully be able to ramp up the micro-loan program as we’ve received a lot of interest in the impact gift program.
Will Vida Plena employ more women?
We are looking for new ladies right now. We’ll certainly have more space, and business has been good!
What is different about the new school?
We are excited to be offering a dual language program for the kids in Hope Academy. This means that half of the day will be in English and half in Spanish. We have learned from other dual language programs that by the time the kids graduate, they are completely bi-lingual. For kids in the Bávaro/Punta Cana area, this means more opportunity to work at the resorts, local businesses or other tourist areas who all demand multiple language skills.
Where is the new campus located?
The new campus is conveniently located in between the villages of Monte Verde and El Hoyo where our sponsored kids live, and close to the 2nd Mile Education Center (our first school).
